Stat Lab · Lesson 15: WHIP: base runners per inning
Cade Smith faced six batters in a 9-5 Guardians win over the White Sox last night, and three of them reached base on a hit or a walk. Hits and walks are the two most common ways a batter gets on base, and one simple stat counts them for a whole season. It is called WHIP, and his is 0.96, against 1.30 for the league as a whole. Lower is better.
The idea. WHIP stands for walks plus hits per inning pitched. It adds up the batters a pitcher lets on base in those two ways and divides by his innings, so a starter and a reliever sit on the same scale. Lower is better: every runner is a possible run, and a homer with two men on is worth three runs instead of one. Walks are mostly the pitcher’s own doing. Hits are shakier: whether a ball in play finds a glove depends a lot on the defense and on luck, which BABIP (batting average on balls in play) tracks.
The math. WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched. Cade Smith has walked 23 batters and allowed 48 hits in 74 innings. His WHIP: (23 + 48) ÷ 74.00 = 71 ÷ 74.00 = 0.96, the published figure. Over a nine-inning game, that is 9 × 71 ÷ 74.00 ≈ 8.6 base runners, where the league average is 11.7.
The scale. Among the 389 pitchers with 40-plus innings, his 0.96 is the 25th-lowest. Every nine innings he allows 11.7 − 8.6 = 3.1 fewer base runners than an average pitcher: fewer chances for the other team to score. Runners and runs go together: his ERA is 1.95.
What it doesn’t tell you:
- Batters hit .277 against him on balls in play; the typical pitcher with 40-plus innings allows .285. Nothing unusual there, so his WHIP looks earned.
- Hit batters don’t count: adding his four would raise his WHIP to (71 + 4) ÷ 74.00 = 1.01. Neither do runners who reach on errors.
- A single and a home run count the same in WHIP, one base runner each, though the homer does far more damage.
Try it. Tonight, keep one pitcher’s WHIP yourself: count the hits and walks he allows and the outs he records. Divide the runners by the innings (outs ÷ 3). Five runners in six innings is 5 ÷ 6 = 0.83.

- Q1. Cade Smith retires the next three batters in order. What happens to his WHIP?
- Q2. A box score shows 6.2 innings. How many innings is that as a decimal?
- Q3. A batter reaches base when he is hit by a pitch. Does that count against the pitcher’s WHIP?
Show answers
- A1. It drops. The runners stay at 71 while the innings grow to 75.00: 71 ÷ 75.00 = 0.95.
- A2. 6 2/3, or 6.67. The digit after the dot counts outs, not tenths.
- A3. No. Only walks and hits go into WHIP, so a pitcher who hits a lot of batters looks a little better than his real traffic on the bases.
